Nitrogen Removal from Landfill Leachate via the Nitrite Route

چکیده

The feasibility of removing nitrogen from mature landfill leachate using the nitrite route was investigated in a two-stage SBR system – (1 first stage, short-cut nitrification; second stage, denitrification via nitrite. With a volumetric exchange rate (n) of 0.3 d and an oxygen concentration of between 1.2 and 1.3 mg/L, the nitrite accumulation ratio – (NO2-N)×100/(NOx-N)% – was between 32% and 37%. For the same hydraulic retention time, but lower oxygen concentration – between 0.8 and 0.9 mg/L – nitrite accumulation averaged 96%, indicating that ammonia was removed completely via the nitrite pathway. In the second step, an external carbon source was added to promote denitrification. Complete removal of nitrite was obtained for a carbon dose of 2.4 mg COD/mg NO2-N using acetic acid and 3.8 mg COD/mg NO2-N for butyric acid. Also, a higher denitrification rate – 14.6 mg NO2-N/g VSS·h – was observed with butyric acid as compared with acetic acid – 9.12 mg NO2-N/g VSS·h.

Nitrogen removal via the nitrite pathway during wastewater co-treatment with ammonia-rich landfill leachates in a sequencing batch reactor

The biological treatment of ammonia-rich landfill leachates due to an inadequate C to N ratio requires expensive supplementation of carbon from an external carbon source. In an effort to reduce treatment costs, the objective of the study was to determine the feasibility of nitrogen removal via the nitrite pathway during landfill leachate co-treatment with municipal wastewater. Initially, the la...

Artificial intelligence control of a sequencing batch reactor for nitrogen removal via nitrite from landfill leachate.

Leachate generated in old landfills is a high-strength wastewater, which is particularly difficult to treat owing to its low biochemical oxygen demand/total Kjeldahl nitrogen ratio. This paper seeks to demonstrate that reliable leachate treatment by means of sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) is indeed possible by means of the application of a smart control system. This study assesses the results...

Integrating landfill bioreactors, partial nitritation and anammox process for methane recovery and nitrogen removal from leachate

A new process consisting of a landfill bioreactor, partial-nitritation (PN) and the anammox process has been developed for landfill leachate treatment. In this study, the landfill bioreactor exhibited excellent performance in methane-rich biogas recovery, with a specific biogas yield of 0.47 L gas g(-1) COD and methane percentages of 53-76%. PN was achieved in the aerobic reactor by high free a...

Removal of Ammoniacal-Nitrogen Removal From an Artificial Landfill Leachate in Downflow Reed Beds

The fate of ammoniacal-nitrogen (NH4-N) was studied in a lab-scale downflow reed bed system treating an artificial landfill leachate. Individual reed beds were submerged by the leachate, then drained and rinsed by tap water. It was discovered that NH4-N was removed by a two-staged process, adsorption onto the reed bed media followed by nitrification into nitrite-nitrogen (NO2-N) and nitrate-nit...

Optimisation of sanitary landfill leachate treatment in a sequencing batch reactor.

A bench-scale SBR was operated for almost three years in an attempt to optimise the treatment of leachates generated in old landfill. The results of the first two years were used to design a monitoring and control system based on artificial intelligence concepts. Nitrogen removal was optimized via the nitrite shortcut. Nitrification and N removal were usually higher than 98% and 90%, respective...
